Gysel Power Dividers / Combiners
Presented by Ulrich Gysel in 1975, Gysel Power Dividers / Combiners are rectangle shaped microwave circuits. 2 way power splitters are composed of 5 ports: one input; two outputs, and two loaded ports (internally or externally).The main difference between Gysel and Wilkinson power divider/ combiners, is that Gysel ones cannot be multistage. Therefore, they are narrow band devices and cannot cover multiple octaves. However they can handle much more power than Wilkinson. Furthermore, because the load are often directly connected to the case of the device, it can handle much more power imbalance; the casing acting as a cold plate. What is a Gysel power divider / combiner?
Gysel an alternative topology to Wilkinson used when designing an in-phase power splitter/combiner, especially, if you need high power on a small frequency range.
How does a Gysel Power Divider / Combiners work?
Gysel power dividers are rectangle shaped microwave circuits. The short sides of the rectangle are quarter-wave lines and the long sides are half-wave lines. 2 way power divider are made of 5 ports : one input ; two outputs, and two loaded ports.
In divider mode the input signal is splitted equally in phase and amplitude between the output. The loads are controlling the isolation between the outputs.
In combiner mode, the two inputs are combining in the output. In this case, the loads are still handling the isolation between the inputs, preventing one input source to damage the other one. Furthermore, the loads are also absorbing any unbalance (phase and/or amplitude) between the input signals.
How to design a Gysel Power Divider / Combiner?
Let’s consider the Gysel power combiner as a rectangle. The long sides of the rectangle are TL1 and TL3; the short ones are 2 x TL2 .An input line TL0 (impedance Z0 = 50 Ohm) is connected to middle of TL1. The ideal value are Z1= 70 Ohm; Z2 is equal to Z0 (i.e. 50 Ohm) and Z3 is 25 Ohm. The isolation resistor values are R=Z0.TL1 and TL3 are half-wave line (lambda/2), and TL2 is a quarter-wave (lambda/4) line. Because there is no closed-form equation for this kind of combiner/divider, you need to use a CAD program such as ADS, Genesys, Designer, etc.
What are the advantages of a Gysel power divider / combiner?
Gysel power divider / combiner main advantage is power handling. Because the loads are either connected to the case or externally mounted, it is much easier to dissipate the heat. However the main drawback of Gysel products is that it cannot be multistaged, therefore its use is limited to narrowband applications.
